In the beginning…

A good story has to have a beginning, middle and end.  That being said, my story begins a year after World War II in Bethesda, Maryland.  Our mother, Elizabeth Rebecca Spong, a sixteen year old, in labor and water already broken, is admitted sometime on June 11, 1946.

It is at Suburban Hospital that her first daughter is born and at 12:44 a.m., weighing in at 3 lbs and 8 oz.,   Her second child arrives at 1:23 a.m., weighing 5 lbs, 1 oz.  The twin girls are named Linda Clara (1) and Laura Carol (2) Spong. Both girls are doing well.  Elizabeth, however is in a lot of pain.  At some point during the delivery, she is given a pint of AB blood.

She has tries many times, unsuccessfully, to breastfeed.  Family are allowed to come to her room but Elizabeth becomes upset, to the point that she requests that no more visitors have contact with her.

Elizabeth stays in the hospital until July 3, 1946 and at some point is told that her babies are released, adopted to separate homes and she cannot know where they are.  Upon hearing this, she becomes very upset and is released to Mayhill Hospital for more care…

More to come…
